A doctorates degree (also known as a PhD) is the most advanced degree that can be achieved in the United States. It represents expertise in a particular subject and proves that the earner is able to conduct and can effecitvely communicate research of an educational nature. Earning a doctorates involves performing new research, represented by the doctoral thesis or dissertation. Many doctorate degrees are offered online which are usually professional instead academic in nature.
Doctorates degrees involve a significant time commitment to earn because there are very high expectations for a thesis or dissertation. Normal campus-based programs can take anywhere from four to eight years, depending on the field. Total time also varies from school to school and from student to student because every dissertation is distinct.
Some doctorates prepare graduates for work in a specific industry or field, such as a Doctor of Education or Doctor of Musical Arts. These degree programs may not require as much original research, although they do require a thorough thesis.
